The last two members of your team are the digital members: the social media person and the videographers who provides your content. They work in tandem with the digital making team to spread the word about who you are and expand the awareness of your music (and videos). They communicate your image through what is posted online and expand your reach as you build a fanbase and increase your buzz and movement. There is a lot of misinformation out here as well. Try to get advice from the folks who have had success and who are still actively creating success for other people--currently!! Research everything. Decide what success means for you and put together your plan to get there. Then follow the plan. I won't listen to your music. I don't give individual consultations. I don't respond to artists asking me to manage them or asking how to hire me. You are NOT my responsibility. I'm just an industry geek trying to help rappers with a little free information and general advice. It is up to YOU--yes, your career is magically YOUR responsibility, to do the research to see which tactics will benefit your own career. I'm just sharing what works for me and my clients. If you don't understand what I do in the industry, it's a sad statement on your research skills. Distribution is the way rappers and musicians get their music onto the platforms like Spotify, Apple, Music, Amazon Music, etc. It's also how they get official music onto Instagram, TikTok, etc. There are distributors who charge a flat fee like Tunecore, DistroKid, etc--you pay one price to upload an album or a single and then you receive 100% of the income they collect. The upside is you get 100% of the money; the downside is there's no incentive for them to get the best deal possible because their business model is to collect flat fees. The majority of distributors offer splits, such as 80/20, which is the most common percentage split--the distributor keeps 20% of the collected income as a fee for distributing the music, maintaining their dashboard and website, and collecting the money. Some distributors offer label services or fund marketing and promotions, but most do not. That's really the job of a record label. When they offer additional services, the splits often change in favor of the distributor--I've seen deals anywhere from 92/8 down to 50/50. You get what you negotiate. Your leverage is based on how well your distributor expects your music to do in the marketplace. There is a lot of misinformation out here on the internet as well. Anthony Curtis (Larenz Tate) is a young man coming of age in the Bronx in 1968. Heath has won the Rib Team of the year in the Memphis BBQ Network for the past 4 years; (He’s well on his way to locking up a fifth title) so he knows a little something about cooking ribs. I’m thankful he’s willing to share his technique with us. Heath cooks Heritage Farms Cheshire Pork in bbq competitions. This meat is known for its’ superior marbling and flavor. The ribs are given a quick trim to remove and excess fat or sinew and he pulls the membrane off the back. For KCBS contest Heath cooks 4-6 slabs of St. Louis cut ribs and for MBN contests he cooks 12 slabs of the loin back ribs which are a Memphis staple. The ribs get a light coat of yellow mustard; then a generous layer of his Jalapeño Garlic seasoning; followed by medium layers of his signature Pecan and Honey Rubs. The same process is repeated on both sides, and he seasons the ribs about 20 minutes prior to going on the pit. For this cook Heath used my Trager grill running at 275⁰ with a mixture of Hickory and Cherry pellets for smoke flavor. The ribs go on the grill for about 2- 2 ½ hours or until the rub adheres to the meat and then they’re wrapped. In the wrap apply a light layer of Honey rub and lay the slab meat side down. Add a touch more Honey rub to the back side and ¾ cup of Heath’s Butter Bath mixture (it’s a powdered form of Brown Sugar, Butter, Honey, and other spices mixed with apple juice). Be sure to double wrap the ribs so the bones don’t poke through the foil. The ribs go back on the pit for an hour to tenderize and Heath pulls them off the pit when the internal temperature reaches 204 - 208⁰. He carefully takes the each slab out of the foil wrap and dust the back side with his Sweet Rub and light glaze (1 cup Sweet BBQ Sauce & ½ cup Tangy Vinegar). Then repeats the same process on the meat side. The ribs go back on the pit for 15-20 minutes to set the glaze and then it’s time to serve them to the judges. These ribs had a beautiful appearance and perfect texture, but the best part was the flavor. The rub combination and tangy sweet glaze brought out the richness in the Cheshire Pork.
